From landmarks to online communities, neighborhoods to news anchors, this annual groundswell unites millions of people for a common goal: saving more women’s lives. Cardiovascular disease is the No. 1 killer of women. Wear red to be seen, to be counted, to be heard, to make an impact. Together, we are stronger than heart disease and stroke.

Why I Go Red

Big Lots Employee Sarah Hoyle

My mom had her first heart attack at age 39. I remember standing there in shock for a few seconds before dialing 911. I’ll never forget watching her being taken away on a stretcher. I was so scared I’d lose her right then and there at just 8 years old. But my mom overcame, and though she continued to battle heart disease, she made lifestyle changes that allowed her to continue living until she was 53 when, despite all her efforts, she finally succumbed to heart disease. My life changed completely that day. I thought it would be the end of me, but losing my mom inspired me to better my chances at a healthy life.

In honor of my mom, I have decided to go red by committing to my health by eating a clean diet and undertaking a consistent exercise routine. I’m in the process of becoming a certified personal trainer and nutritionist. As someone with a family history of heart issues, I am going to work hard to stay healthy so I can live as long as possible.

I go red and fight for women’s heart health because I lost my mom to a stroke, and have survived two mini strokes myself. These experiences were major drivers that pushed me to make healthy life changes like improving my diet, working out daily, and striving to be more active in everything I do.
